In 2018, 750 active-duty military personnel were enrolled in a study performed by JAMA Network Open. Half of the participants were instructed to visit a chiropractor for lower back pain, while the other half were given “standard” treatments such as medication to treat their pain.
After six weeks, participants who had visited the chiropractor reported less pain intensity, improved function, higher satisfaction with their treatment, and required less pain medication.
Seeing a chiropractor for lower back pain is an effective and non-invasive treatment, and in some instances can provide relief after only a few visits. Through spinal manipulation, stretching, gentle massage, and other techniques, your doctor can help realign your spine, relieve tension and pressure on ligaments and nerves, and help restore your quality of life.
After completing your preliminary evaluation, your chiropractor will be able to determine what type of manipulation and exercises will be required to treat your particular type of pain. You may be asked to return for several visits over the course of many weeks, or your pain may be something that can be alleviated in just a handful of visits. Oftentimes, your doctor will suggest ongoing visits for maintenance purposes, to ensure proper alignment and to avoid having the pain return down the road. They may also recommend stretches and exercises you can perform at home to aid in your healing.
