Colic
Many times with an inconsolable and fussy child the default diagnosis is colic. Even today the actual cause of colic is disputed. The question we’d like you to ask is not how to treat an infant with colic symptoms but WHAT other underlying issues could you be ignoring by giving your child’s discomfort a colic label.
Study finds chiropractic care more beneficial than medication
A study conducted in 1999 by Wiberg JM, Nordsteen J, Nilsson N at the Center for Biomechanics at Odense University in Denmark found Chiropractic care more effective than a commonly prescribed medication in treatment for colic like symptoms in infants. The study consisted of two groups of infants experiencing colic symptoms over a period of time. One group was given Dimethicone to reduce colic where the other group received chiropractic care. The results of that study showed that by trial days 4 to 7, hours of crying were reduced by 1 hour in the Dimethicone groups compared with 2.4 hours in the Chiropractic group. On days 8 through 11, crying was reduced by 1 hour for the Dimethicone group, whereas crying in the Chiropractic group was reduced by 2.7 hours. From trial day 5 onward the Chiropractic group did significantly better than the Dimethicone.
Other causes are often overlooked
Many times with an inconsolable and fussy child the default diagnosis is colic. Even today the actual cause of colic is disputed. The question we’d like you to ask is not how to treat an infant with colic symptoms but WHAT other underlying issues could you be ignoring by giving your child’s discomfort a colic label. Children can experience subluxations (misalignment of vertebrae) during the birth process by being constrained in utero, a breech presentation or even vacuum extraction during delivery. Since many subluxations in infants are in the upper cervical area, there is a strong possibility, especially when there has been a history of birth trauma, that these babies are suffering from head, neck pain even nausea due to spinal misalignments in this area.
Treatment for colic recommends that a pediatric exam is done
A simple consultation paired with a gentle exam by a chiropractor can help you rule out any possibilities you may have over looked. In general a pediatric examination by a chiropractor is beneficial in making sure your child’s spine is growing properly.
